How to care Assassin Snail & How many snails does an Assassin Snail eat?

Assassin snails are a fascinating addition to any freshwater aquarium, particularly for those dealing with an infestation of pest snails. These industrious little creatures not only add visual interest with their striking appearance but also help control unwanted snail populations. In this article, we'll explore how to care for assassin snails and delve into their dietary habits.

What Are Assassin Snails?

Assassin snails, scientifically known as Anentome helena or Clea helena, are small freshwater snails originating from Southeast Asia, including regions like Thailand, Malaysia, and Sumatra in Indonesia. These snails are easily identifiable by their distinctive spiral shells with alternating dark brown and yellow stripes, reminiscent of a bumblebee pattern. They typically reach up to 1 inch (2.5 cm) in length.

These snails possess a siphon tube, which they extend to detect food. They are known for their unique hunting behavior, often burying themselves in the substrate with only the siphon visible, ready to spring into action when they detect prey.

Setting Up an Aquarium for Assassin Snails

Assassin snails are relatively low-maintenance and can thrive in a range of aquarium conditions. Here’s how to set up an ideal environment for them:

  • Tank Size: A single snail can comfortably live in a tank as small as 2 gallons, though larger tanks are preferable.

  • Temperature: They thrive in water temperatures between 70–80°F (21–27°C).

  • pH and Hardness: These snails prefer an alkaline pH of 7.2–8.0 and moderate to hard water (GH). Soft water can lead to shell damage, so consider adding crushed coral or mineral supplements if necessary.

Tank Mates for Assassin Snails

Given their carnivorous nature, assassin snails should not be housed with snails you wish to keep alive. They can coexist peacefully with most fish, dwarf shrimp, and non-snail invertebrates. Avoid keeping them with snail-eating fish like pufferfish and certain loaches to prevent them from becoming prey.

What Do Assassin Snails Eat?

Assassin snails primarily feed on other snails, making them an excellent solution for controlling pest snail populations such as bladder snails, ramshorn snails, and Malaysian trumpet snails. On average, an assassin snail will eat one snail every two days. If food is scarce, they may resort to eating larger snails like mystery or nerite snails.

In the absence of live snails, assassin snails can be fed high-protein fish foods such as frozen bloodworms, fish flakes, pellets, sinking wafers, and Repashy gel food. To ensure healthy shell growth, include mineral-enriched foods in their diet.

Breeding Assassin Snails

Breeding assassin snails can be rewarding but requires patience. Unlike many pest snails, assassin snails are not hermaphrodites and need a male and female to reproduce. To increase the chances of successful breeding, start with a group of at least six snails.

Assassin snails reproduce slowly. The female lays single, translucent egg capsules that stick to surfaces like rocks and driftwood. These capsules contain one yellow egg and hatch into juvenile snails after a few weeks.

With proper care, assassin snails can become a beneficial and intriguing part of your aquarium ecosystem. They not only help control pest snails but also add a unique aesthetic with their vibrant shells and interesting behaviors.
