How to Keep Angelfish Healthy and Happy

Keeping angelfish can be a truly joyfull and peacefull hobby. Their graceful swimming, unique shape, and calm nature makes them one of the most loved fish in freshwater aquarium hobby. But if you're new to fishkeeping, you might be wondering – how do I actually keep my angelfish healthy and happy?

What Tank Size is Best for Angelfish?

Angelfish are not small fish – they grow tall and wide, so they need space to swim freely. If you’re keeping just one or a pair, go for at least a 70- liter tank. If you want to keep a group, 113 - 151 liters is a better choice.

More space = less stress = happy angelfish!

What is the Right Water Temperature and Conditions?

Angelfish love warm, clean water.

  • Temperature: 25°C to 28°C (77°F to 82°F)

  • pH: Between 6.5 to 7.5

  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately hard

Install a heater and use a thermometer to keep track of the water temperature daily.

Do Angelfish Need a Filter?

Yes! A good filter keeps the water clean and removes harmful waste. Angelfish do best in low-flow filters – strong current can stress them.

Use a sponge filter or hang-on-back filter, and clean the filter media once in 2–3 weeks.

What Do Angelfish Eat?

Angelfish are omnivores, which means they eat both plant and animal-based food.

Feed them:

  • High-quality flakes or pellets

  • Frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp

  • Blanched spinach or peas (once in a while)

Feed 2 times a day and give only what they can finish in 2-3 minutes. Overfeeding = bad water = unhappy fish!

Do Angelfish Like Plants?

Yes! Angelfish enjoy swimming through tall plants like Amazon swords, Vallisneria, and Anubias. Plants give them hiding spots and make them feel safe.

Can Angelfish Live with Other Fish

Angelfish are mostly peaceful, but they don’t like fin-nippers or aggressive fish.

Best tank mates:

  • Corydoras

  • Mollies

  • Platies

  • Gouramis (peaceful ones)

  • Ram cichlids

🚫 Avoid keeping them with bettas or tiger barbs.

How to Know If My Angelfish is Happy?

Here are some signs your angelfish is happy and healthy:

  • Active swimming

  • Bright colors

  • Eats well

  • Clear eyes

  • No fin damage

If they hide all the time, lose colour, or stop eating – it’s a red flag. Check your water and feeding routine quickly.

Any Special Care Tips?

  • Test your water once a week using test kits

  • Clean the glass and remove uneaten food regularly

  • Quarantine new fish before adding them to the tank

  • Avoid sudden changes in temperature or water parameters
