The Doctor Wrasse, also known as the Yellowhead Wrasse or the Melanurus Wrasse, is a colorful and popular marine fish species belonging to the Labridae family.

  • Physical Appearance: The Doctor Wrasse has a striking appearance with a predominantly pinkish-red body adorned with vibrant blue and yellow markings. Juveniles typically display a more subdued coloration compared to adults. One of the most distinguishing features of this species is its yellow head, which gives it its common name, "Yellowhead Wrasse."

  • Size: Doctor Wrasse can grow up to around 6 inches (15 centimeters) in length, making them medium-sized wrasse species.

  • Habitat: These wrasse are native to the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters of the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific Ocean. They inhabit coral reefs, rocky outcrops, and areas with sandy substrates, often frequenting reef slopes and lagoon environments.

  • Behavior: Doctor Wrasse are active and curious fish known for their energetic swimming behavior. They are often seen darting in and out of crevices and coral formations in search of food. In aquariums, they can be bold and may establish territories, especially in the absence of other dominant fish.

  • Diet: In the wild, Doctor Wrasse are carnivorous and feed primarily on small invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, and worms. In captivity, they readily accept a varied diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and chopped seafood.

  • Compatibility: Doctor Wrasse are generally peaceful fish and can be kept in community aquariums with other non-aggressive species. However, they may exhibit aggression towards smaller or more timid tank mates, particularly if they encroach on their territory. It's essential to provide plenty of hiding spots and visual barriers to reduce potential aggression.

  • Aquarium Care: Keeping Doctor Wrasse in a well-maintained aquarium with stable water parameters is crucial for their health and well-being. They prefer aquariums with plenty of live rock or coral formations to explore and establish territories. Adequate filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain water quality.
