Rotala rotundifolia is a versatile and popular aquatic plant in the aquascaping world, known for its thin, elongated stems and small, round leaves. Its color ranges from green to shades of red, pink, or orange, depending on the lighting and nutrient levels. This plant is easy to care for and adds a beautiful vertical element to the midground or background of an aquarium.

  • Care Requirements
    • Lighting: Moderate to high. High light encourages vibrant red or pink hues.
    • CO₂ Requirement: Not mandatory but recommended for better growth and coloration.
    • Water Parameters:
      • Temperature: 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F)
      • pH: 6.0 to 7.5
      • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH)
    • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate is ideal, but it can absorb nutrients from the water column as well.
    • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast, especially under optimal conditions.
    • Pruning: Regular trimming helps maintain a bushy appearance and prevents the plant from becoming leggy.
  • Uses in Aquascaping
    • Midground to Background: Perfect for creating lush, colorful walls in the background of the tank.
  • Contrast Plant: Its red or pink tones provide a striking contrast against green plants.
  • Tanks: Suitable for nano tanks to larger aquariums, providing flexibility in aquascape design.
  • Special Considerations
    • Lighting for Color: Higher light intensities and iron supplementation help bring out the red hues.
    • Growth Control: Without trimming, the lower parts of the plant may lose leaves due to insufficient light.
    • Algae Management: Stable water conditions are essential to prevent algae on its delicate leaves.
